Come Take a Train Ride and Consider Pet Adoption!

Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) is excited to partner with Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation (ORHF) for its first adoption outreach event in five years!  

The adoption outreach event is on International “Rescue an Animal Day” on August 19, 2023 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center .

MCAS foster pets that are available for adoption will be on site for meet-and-greets, and to conduct the entire adoption process at the event. Visitors are also invited to tour the center and participate in open air train rides (optional).

MCAS will release more information about foster animals available for adoption prior to the event.

Adoption and licensing fees apply.

Admission and parking at ORHC is free.

What pets will be available? 

MCAS foster pets that are available for adoption will be on site for meet-and-greets. You can expect lots of kittens, dogs, cats, and other small animals.

Is the event free? 

Yes, you can meet the pets at no cost. However, adoption fees will still apply

Train rides are optional and between $10-$14, depending on your age. You can reserve your tickets with Oregon Rail Heritage Center at orhf.org.

Adoption and licensing fees still apply. Adoption fees are reduced by 50%.

Dog adoption fees (with current adoption special)

  • $150 for puppies under 7 months
  • $80 for dogs between 7 months and under 6 years
  • $30 for dogs 6 years and older

Cat adoption fees (with current adoption special)

  • $75 for kittens under 7 months
  • $40 for cats between 7 months and under 6 years
  • $15 for cats 6 years and older
  • BOGO- Adopt a pair of cats of any age and the second cat (equal or lesser fee) will be half the normal adoption fee. Not applicable with other offers. Consider adopting bonded pairs, or adopt a senior mentor cat for your kitten.

Will there be adoption counseling?

Be prepared to speak with adoption counselors and foster volunteers. They will be at the event to help you understand the unique needs and recommendations for each individual pet. They know the pet the best and can help match you with a pet. 

I’m interested in adopting, what should I bring?

Bring a collar and a leash for dogs, and a collar for cats. Temporary cat carriers are provided, but you can also bring your own.


About Train Rides

Train rides are not required to participate in the Adoption Outreach Event .

Advance ticket reservations are strongly encouraged. Train depart times are at 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, and 4 pm. Trips last approximately 45 minutes.

  • $10 for children 3-12
  • Children 2 and under ride free (on lap)

Pulled by the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation ’s UP96 diesel locomotive, open air train rides depart from and return to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Lasting about 45 minutes, each ride travels along the scenic Willamette River in the heart of Portland.
